MAN-eTruck@AT_1.0 – Development and testing of the first electric-powered driven MAN Truck in Austria, is a R&D project funded under the Frontrunner Initiative 2017 of the BMVIT – Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology and the participation of AIT and CNL.

The main objective of the MAN-eTruck@AT_1.0  R&D project is to develop (and bring to our roads) the first eTrucks of an OEM, together with the AIT – Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH  as research partner and the partnership of CNL – Council for Sustainable Logistics as the partner for the test phase (customer requirements).

AIT is Austria’s largest Research and Technology Organisation and belong to the first league worldwide in many research areas as Electric Drive Technologies. CNL is a Europe-wide unique initiative by  seventeen of the largest Austrian companies from the commerce, logistics and manufacturing sectors.

 

Total vehicle development

Using agile development methods in the sense of a total vehicle development essential challenges (incl. frame structure, electrical ancillaries, air conditioning concept, etc.), powertrain (incl. e-motor, Brake system, thermal management, operating strategy, etc.) and electrics / electronics (incl. battery technology, etc.) will be dealt at MAN-eTruck@AT_1.0.

 

eTruck tests at nine CNL member companies

In addition to the on-board innovations, essential knowledge will be gained during the course of the project gained close to MAN production facilities in Steyr (Austria). New findings can be achieved through the close cooperation with CNL in different application scenarios for the validation and subsequent further development of the prototypes (those will be tested at nine CNL partners).

 

Research Co-operation with AIT

The cooperation with AIT enables more ambitious targets in the field of vehicle air conditioning and opens access to more necessary test infrastructure and ensures the achievement of objectives in the planned project period.

Magna Steyr – FCREEV

The FCREEV vehicle concept is put forward as a possible solution approach for very long ranges in emission-free driving operation and combines the advantages of two different alternative drives.

In the framework of this project funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), the project partners HyCentA Research GmbH, Magna Steyr, Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH and the Institute for Powertrains and Automotive Technology (IFA) of TU Wien present the unique vehicle concept FCREEV (Fuel Cell Range Extended Electric Vehicle) as a possible future solution approach for very long ranges in completely emission-free operation.

The advantages of different technologies are made use of to compensate for known disadvantages: for example, the time-consuming charging process of purely battery-driven electric vehicles.

AIT – Urban EV

URBAN-EV is an electric city vehicle which fulfills specification of L7e vehicle class, which meets the crash requirements of the vehicle class M1.

The project aims for a weight reduction of about 17%. The swiveling rear axle leads to a smaller space requirement in stationary traffic. The vehicle structure consists of a crashworthy two-link frame structure and provides safe space for the batteries. When manufacturing the frame structure, the joining of the integrated casting nodes uses Electromagnetic Pulse Technology as an alternative to fusion welding.

OBSERVE – Unmanned Aerial Systems

Unmanned aerial systems constitute a fast developing sector of aviation, with great potential. Smaller UAS in particular are increasingly used in Europe. Applications include commercial and security use, agri-culture, 3D mapping, disaster relief, and product delivery to general users. However, the regulatory framework in the EU is fragmented. Austrian competences include innovative drone concepts, multi sensor platforms, data processing and image recognition. Over 20 Austrian companies deal with UAS, and the number is growing.

 

AIT Austrian Institute of Technology is Austria’s largest research and technology organisation. We show a static display of an unmanned aerial vehicle, which permits the situational awareness of emergency scenarios using convolutional neural networks.

 

Carinthia University of Applied Sciences. Innovative Unmanned Aerial System Research for Very High Resolution Environmental Monitoring and Multidimensional Change Detection. We display our current UAS research results using a wide variety of sensors. You can experience our new Web Portal “DRONE ZONE AUSTRIA” for supporting safe and legally compliant drone mission planning in Austria.

 

Drone Recue Systems, awarded by the European Space Agency, develops THE fast and autonomous parachute plus blackbox safety system for commercial UAVs. We show how UAVs can be used commercially in a safe manner.

 

The Institute of Aerospace Engineering of the University of Applied Sciences Wiener Neustadt offers a Master degree program covering all topics related to air- and space engineering. The aircraft presented is one of our projects, demonstrating the current state of an ongoing design study on the development of an autonomously operating transport drone.

ÖBB – Connected Transport

Rail is the safest form of land transport. The already high level of safety is achieved by modern train protection and control systems which allow permanent surveillance and automatization of operational actions.

High accuracy positioning of rolling-stock and algorithm for capacity optimization on the network are the keys for automatic train operation. Together with smart assets which ensure condition based monitoring and maintenance high productivity, availability and reliability is guaranteed.

 

Train Checkpoints: ÖBB-Infrastruktur scans trains

Train checkpoints are fixed technical installations on the track. Different sensors are measuring the conditions (loading, driving stability, etc.) of all trains running on the certain track. All checkpoints connect to a central monitoring system for the smart data analysis. The roll out of about fourty train checkpoints has started in 2017 and is one of the largest of all rail network operators in Europe.

 

Research Project ‘Greenlight’: high accuracy GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) positioning of trains

Based on corrections of the ÖBB-Infrastruktur-owned GNSS reference station network, the position of trains can be tracked with an accuracy of approximately 0.5 m. The implemented solution offers a broad field of use-cases, e.g. better planning of maintenance work of the rolling stock based on the exact number of the distance driven, enhancement of the information systems on train stations for our customers, positive effects on the energy demand with regard to train operation and disposition.

The rail sector can play a key role in reducing CO2  emissions from transport and be part of the climate solution.  In order to reach this target, a whole bundle of decarbonization measures are needed.  ÖBB, with its Environmental Portfolio, has been contributing with an array of measures to reduce their carbon footprint and helping to pave the way to a carbon-neutral economy.

The advancement of energy-efficient, resource-saving technologies has been the focus of ÖBB for many years now. Almost 92% of traction energy in the ÖBB network originated from renewable energy sources, mainly hydropower, produced by ÖBB owned hydroelectric power plants. Other measures include operational efficiency gains through ECO Driving as well as H2-zero mobility R&D projects such as Hybrid locomotives.

 

eHybrid

Two eHybrid locomotives were retrofitted by upgrading conventional locomotives and are intended for shunting applications on not electrified lines. One has been equipped with a high-capacity power unit and the other one has been turned into a hybrid on which a range of batteries can be extended by fuel cells.

 

Bulk transport of hydrogen

Rail Cargo Group has carried out a feasibility study on bulk transport of hydrogen to find new market opportunities in the age of decarbonisation, finding out that H2 cannot only be transported by pipelines and trucks, but also on rail, even as non hazardeous goods.

Augmented Reality

Augmented reality devices like Google Glass and Microsoft HoloLens mix digital information with reality. Exclusive devices and selected first visions on apps are tested within ÖBB and may become reality in the areas of blended-learning, maintenance-support, technical acceptance & simulation, as well as remote-assistance and facility management.

Detection of emotions and psychological stress

The human face human gives an unconscious indication about the emotional condition and the psychological stress a person is exposed to. Based on the activity of different muscles in the facial area the relative share of the six base emotions can be detected and used for an evaluation.

A sensor is used to capture the facial expression in a non-intrusive way.

The stress detected with this method is emotional stress (as for example happiness is also causing stress) and needs to be associated with health parameters (e.g. EKG, BVP) that are usually captured with Healthbands. Knowledge about the condition and development can help to get insights about immediate and delayed impacts of the emotional state of the drivers and derive Insights for following initiatives and activities.

Increasing the commercial viability of rail road traffic – this is the goal of Shift2Rail, a 920 Million Euro public-private-partnership between European Union and its railroad sector. The VIRTUAL VEHICLE Austria Consortium is focusing its expertise on two of the five main thrusts of Shift2Rail: implementation of a more cost-effective infrastructure with higher capacity, and technologies for sustainable and competitive rail freight transport in Europe.

The rail demonstrator enables the visualization of the wheel – railroad track contact. Depending on the speed the demonstrator shows different damage effects such as temperature development, crack formation, wear and tear. The speed is individually adjustable.

ASFiNAG – Digital Infrastructure of Motorways

It is essential for a modern road operator to know what is happening on the street network. For this purpose ASFINAG relies on digital infrastructure. Along with other elements such as communication devices and displays, this infrastructure includes a variety of sensors which serve to detect traffic and its surroundings in the best way possible. Against this backdrop traffic can be controlled and road operators can respond to events and changes.

 

CCTV-Cameras

ASFINAG runs one of the largest video systems in Europe, but all 8,000 video cameras cannot be viewed simultaneously. Therefore an initial selection of relevant images must be carried out in order to enable the activation of the alarm for relevant cameras on the display wall in the event of an incident.

 

Traffic data collection

For the acquisition of traffic data sensor technologies are used in combination (radar, ultrasound, infrared). This ensures that every vehicle is surveyed and its speed is recorded. This data is used to control the traffic guidance system for traffic information and for statistical purposes.

 

Area radar

A relatively new approach is traffic detection within a range of around 700 m by using radar sensors.With this method every vehicle is recorded multiple times per second for information about its speed, direction and size. Due to its stable function this sensor is suitable for the reliable detection of moving or stopped vehicles and lost cargo, for the support of automated vehicles or for opening service lanes even in darkness and bad weather conditions.

Healthy Mobility

ROUTINE demonstrates the amount of physical activity that could be achieved when using public transport. The project delivers empirically proved data about physical activity in the course of trips by public transport. The data is integrated in a route planner, which informs of route-related travel and physical activity gain.

GISMO delivers evidence for promoting active commuting as an element of health prevention strategies in companies. It puts together results from a clinical intervention study and spatial research on the suitability of the environment for active commuting. The goal is to optimize commuting trips in terms of expectable health effect and provide mobility managers with spatially explicit information on active commuting options.

Planning Mobility Spaces

Resulting from a series of research projects a tool-chain is being represented, which combines the different viewpoints of „planning experts“ and „citizens“. The advanced transport planning processes is being demonstrated “hands-on”, including mobile applications, routing and analysis services, eGovernment support and advanced mobility survey.

Within Bikealyze some most adcanced human sensor methods were tested in real-life (including various smartphone sensors and mobile eye-tracking). Advanced algorithms were used to analyse these data, as a major basis for the Bikealyze planning portal. This integrated with a citizen collaboration platform and information (routing) services for bicycle users – thus providing a 360degree service for planners and citizens alike.

The results of the MobilityOptimizer project provide in a similar way a planning tool for public transport. The web tool integrates information about local public transport quality, demand potential and user feedback. Planning relevant information can be analysed on different spatial scale – from municipal level down to the single bus stop. Both public transport planning and transport politics are thus supported.

SMART SURVEY is the complete, out-of-the-box solution for mobility surveys via smartphone app and web service –for cities, communities, traffic planners and mobility researchers. Distinguished features of the system are automatic detection of trip starts and trip ends and automatic inference of trip purposes, thus increasing accuracy and reducing impact on daily activities of respondents.

Silkroad 4.0

Silkroad 4.0 is a media initiative broadcasting how European Technology eases long distance travel adventures. It shares the love for Adventure travelling, high technology and networking. Along their way, they will interview IoT technology experts and demonstrate the use of modern technology.

Silkroad 4.0´s next expedition follows the ancient Silk Road over approximately 10.000km. Their quest goes from Austria to China across 15 Eurasian countries, with an estimated duration of six months.

Silkroad 4.0 exhibits their motorcycle of choice to travel 10.000km of rough terrain along the Silk Road. Also a smart helmet and other gadgets, useful for a long distance travel, are exhibited: emotion trackers, advanced health monitors or crash detection systems for motorcycles.

The VIRTUAL VEHICLE Research Center is an international platform for research and development in the automotive and rail industry, located in Graz/Austria. VIRTUAL VEHICLE presents its unique open research platform. Its well-defined and open interfaces allow the integration and evaluation of new sensor technologies and artificial intelligence algorithms.

Looking at the technology roadmap the next tech- and mind-shift challenge is autonomous driving. In this showcase VIRTUAL VEHICLE presents an electric vehicle with ADAS functions implemented. An ADD Onboard Monitor shows what HD cameras, radar sensors and object analysis detect. In addition it demonstrates how Advanced Control, Driving Monitoring, Collision Detection and Self-Diagnostic work.

CODECS

CODECS is a European project supporting the deployment of cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems and Services (C-ITS), specifically systems for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications.

CODECS networks stakeholders, coordinates initial deployment activities in Europe, aligns implementations road maps, addresses strategy issues, and raises awareness for the idea of cooperative road traffic. The findings of CODECS are taken up for discussion by high-level decision makers and councils (e.g. Amsterdam Group, C-ITS Deployment Platform of European Commission, Standards Setting Organisations, C-ROADS Platform, CAR 2 CAR Communication Consortium).

C-Roads

Experience selected C-ITS Day-1 services in virtual reality – take the driver’s perspective or hover above for watching data and information flow and get a glimpse of what will be deployed by 2019.

The set of C-ITS Day-1 services will be the first step of increasing safety and efficiency on European roads and motorways. Austro Control – TopSky

Austro Control will be showcasing the international Air Traffic Control System “TopSky” a joint development by COOPANS (Cooperation between ANS Providers), a partnership between the five Air Navigation Service Providers from Austria, Croatia, Ireland, Sweden and Denmark. The new “TopSky” system is one of the most advanced of its kind, 70% of the world’s air traffic is currently managed using “TopSky” solutions.

 

The main features of the system include: Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS–B), Controller-Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC), Short Term Conflict Alert (STCA), Medium Term Conflict Detection (MTCD), Conflict and Risk Detection (CARD),    Advanced Arrival Management (AMAN) as well as Free Route Airspace (FRA).

 

The system significantly increases capacity and the ability to handle increases in traffic without any delays, while at the same time reducing costs for airspace users. The COOPANS project is helping to drive forward the harmonisation and unification of European air traffic management systems, in line with the goals of the Single European Sky (SES) initiative.

FLY – Aircraft, Structures and Parts

Aircrafts need to be more and more efficient, green, safe and smart, while the focus is on more passenger-centred air transport. Thus, besides novel aircraft concepts, research concentrates on optimising construction elements, components, and systems for the airframe’s primary structures. Innovative lightweight structures and smart surfaces developed in Austria increase efficiency and sustainability.
